This is the news that those who are concerned about the impact of LEGO on the environment has been waiting to hear ever since they began trials and pilot programs last year.
In their financial report that was released recently, they have also revealed that they will start the process of phasing out single use plastics and switch to the new paper packaging come next year.
It also completed a successful trial of paper bags designed to replace single-use plastic in boxes and will begin phasing in the new paper packaging from early 2022. This development ensures the Group remains on track to make all packaging 100 percent sustainable by 2025.
According to a sustainability roundtable that I attended previously, this initiative will eventually encompass polybags and most probably the individual minifigure packaging as well.
I’m all for swapping out plastic to a more sustainable alternative but LEGO has to make sure that there isn’t an increase in their carbon footprint to produce these paper packaging as well as the increased weight in shipping them.
