The Ford Mustang is one of the most iconic American muscle cars of that era and finally LEGO has included it into its Speed Champions line up!
When the news first broke about the new Speed Champions wave, this was one of the cars I knew I had to get my hands on and here is my quick review on the LEGO Speed Champions 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback (75884) set!
Most of the cars from the Speed Champions theme are around the 150 – 200 piece count and the Fastback clocks in at 187pcs.
The pieces come in three unnumbered bags and there is one loose chassis piece in the box. There is really no need to number the bags as the piece count is so low but I would recommend opening them all up and laying out the contents.
As with most fans of Speed Champions, we are accustomed to the high number of stickers that is required so if you have fat fingers like me, I would advise getting a pair of tweezers to apply the adhesives.
As much as I would have loved for these to be printed, I can understand that with the amount of decals needed for a set this size, it is a lot more economical for them to rely on stickers for the finer details.
The entire Ford Mustang can be completed in under 20 minutes if you are fast but I would take some time to enjoy the build experience as it uses some pretty neat techniques to achieve the look of the car.
To preserve the look of the rear, there is a pretty cool technique that the designers employed which was to use a 1×2 Light Bluish Grey jumper to prop up a 1×2 dark green plate which allowed us to build the taillights sideways.
The ingenious use of the right angle panels below the bonnet element duplicated the Fastback’s trademark front overbite.
The minifigure included is decked out in the classic Ford race car driver outfit with the tan jumpsuit and red and blue trimmings.
He comes with a front and back print with a large classic Ford logo emblazoned on his back. It would have been pretty cool if the helmet was tan in colour as well.
The design is pretty spot on for a replica of the Ford 1968 Mustang Fastback at that scale. It is a real testament to the designer that they were able to preserve the essence of the Fastback in this LEGO model.
The curvature of the body and the accentuated face were achieve by some of the new elements that were introduced recently in the other Speed Champions sets but this would be the first time I’ve encountered them in the dark green colour.
The right and left curve plate 1X2, W/ Bow enhances the look of the front face of the car. This colour is unique to this set at the moment.
The only printed tile in the whole set is the 1×1 round tile with the Mustang logo. It is affixed at the rear of the car and LEGO includes two in the set in case you lose one.
Which means if you want to do build the Fastback in another colour, you’re in luck!
The LEGO Speed Champions 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback (75884) has a recommended retail price of SGD$29.90 which brings up the price per piece to be 16¢.
It is kind of on the pricier side but that is the standard rate for the Speed Champions theme. The exclusive minifigure and the 1×1 round printed tile should justify the higher price point and if you apply the 10% LEGO Certified Store discount, it comes down to 14¢.
And if you get it at the Metro sale which is 20% right off the top, it becomes a lot more attractive although the SGD$29.90 price point is still quite reasonable for such a beautifully designed car.
An elegantly designed car which is a must have for any LEGO Gearhead.
