LEGO Certified Store Visit: Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

LEGO Certified Store: Pavillion Kuala Lumpur

I managed to eke out some time to check out the LEGO Certified Store at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur while I was up covering the Merdeka event in Malaysia.

This is one of the larger (if not largest) LEGO Certified Store in the nation’s capital. It is located in one of the more popular malls in Kuala Lumpur and it is the closest to being in an actual LEGO Brand Store outside of the USA and Europe.

As some of you know, the LEGO Certified Stores in South East Asia are slightly different from the LEGO Brand Stores of our western counterparts. The stores are actually operated by a third party and not owned by The LEGO Group.

What is unique about this outlet is that it features LEGO dioramas by the local AFOLs which is a great way to engage the community.

There is a huge display by the members of LUG of Malaysia (LOM) which features heritage builds that reflect the local architecture and culture. There is even a model of the oldest A&W outlet in Malaysia on display which is a perfect touch of nostalgia.

A vertical pillar is dedicated to a wrap-around mural that depicts a heritage scene that was created by Chris Chow who is also a member of LOM.

The store itself is huge and there is a lot of space to walk around which is a big difference from some of the other LEGO Certified Stores which do not enjoy the abundance of retail real estate.

The Pick-A-Brick wall boasts 80 tubes of elements but only 2/3 were filled with bricks while the rest were empty or close to being depleted. It was probably restocking season.

The price for the large tub is RM95.90 (SGD30.65 / USD22.75) and the small tub goes for RM51.90 (SGD16.59 / USD12.31) which is a good 15% cheaper than in Singapore. Do note that this is only because of the Foreign Exchange but it does make buying across the causeway a lot more attractive.

There were also quite a bit of sales going on with various themes going for up to 40% off. There were a whole bunch of LEGO Star Wars and NEXO Knights sets going for a steal. Some of the sets are not particularly popular but they have some really good parts for builders so if you need some extra elements for cheap, this is something you can pick up if you’re in the area.

As this is operated by a third party outside of The LEGO Group, they are free to create their own loyalty programme. It is similar to the LEGO VIP programme such that you earn VIB (Very Important Brickster) points that count towards your next purchase.

These are not transferable nor can it be used with the LEGO VIP programme. It is only available for the LEGO Certified Stores in Malaysia and not in any other country either.

The prices in Malaysia are comparable to the other markets of the region. Take for example the LEGO Star Wars Snowspeeder (75144) which retails at RM999.90 which is approximately SGD320. The Singapore RRP (Recommended Retail Price) is SGD$399.90.

Yoo do save a little so it is not such a bad idea to pick up a set or two if you are traveling there and have a bit of luggage space to spare.

And as luck would have it, the LEGO Ninjago Movie: Movie Maker Set was on sale there and it hasn’t arrived in Singapore yet so this was a really chance find. It is similar to the LEGO Batman Movie: Movie Maker Set just that the backdrops are different and the minifigure is of Zane.

There is also the Largest Mosaic made out of LEGO bricks that is on display on the third floor of the mall which was initially unveiled at the “Lets go Raya” event back in June.

From what I gather, the mural / mosaic will be on display till the end of the month before it will be dismantled.
