It looks like 2016 is the year of breaking records first with the 13-metre high LEGO version of London’s Tower Bridge and now the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) have just broken the Guinness World record for the longest LEGO suspension bridge ever built!
This behemoth of a structure is completely made out of LEGO bricks which means that there is no metal riggings or supports internally, it is ALL held up by our favourite plastic building blocks!
The bridge is modelled after the Severn Bridge in England. The replica model measures a towering 34 metres high and stretches 16.46-metres in a single span. The previous record for a single unaided span was 14-metres.
And I can already hear the question, the LEGO bridge consists of a total of 205,000 bricks and weighs more than half a tonne.
There is a little misconception when it comes to LEGO bricks in that it is rather fragile but in fact, these plastic blocks can withstand a lot of tension which is clearly demonstrated in the build. This not just an architectural marvel but a feat of LEGO engineering as well.
I’ve included a couple of videos that better explain in detail how it was all achieved which you can check out here:
This was built in conjuncture with the ICE Bridge Engineering event at One Great George Street till April 2017. The event is free of charge and open from Monday to Friday, 10am-5pm.
