There was a bit of furore this morning when the German Peace Society issued a warning against LEGO regarding the LEGO Technic Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey (42113) set that is coming out later next month.
Their main argument is that the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is based on a military vehicle and that LEGO has a firm stance against producing any sets that feature “realistic combat”.
The German Peace Society statement reads:
On 1. August 2020 LEGO® plans to release its first ever military set while internal corporate value documents forbid the production of current military vehicles. The German DFG-VK also criticises the license placed on the set. With every buy, customers help to finance arms companies.
They have also planned for protest outside three LEGO Brand Stores in Germany which includes the flagship store in Berlin.
The LEGO Group has released their own statement regarding the matter:
The LEGO Technic Bell Boeing Osprey V-22 was designed to highlight the important role the aircraft plays in search and rescue efforts.
While our set depicts a rescue version of the plane, the aircraft is predominately used by the military. We have a long-standing policy not to create sets which feature military vehicles and in this case we have not adhered to our own internal guidelines.
As a result, we are currently reviewing our plans to launch this product on August 1.
As of this post, LEGO has removed the LEGO Technic Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey (42113) listing from their online store which might indicate that the set will be cancelled entirely.
